Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
