Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
